Tip of the Week

If you are thinking about adding some new shrubs or trees to your landscape, now is the time to do it.

Springtime showers provide water and nutrients, and roots can settle in before the heat of summer arrives.

When planting trees and shrubs, check the care tag for specific instructions, but a good rule of thumb is the dirt should be at the depth where the roots meet the trunk.

Spotlight on Charity

Love Hope Strength (LHS) is an international, music-centric cancer charity dedicated to saving lives, one concert at a time. The mission is to save lives, right now, with the advances that have already been made in cancer care.

They don't fund cancer research, but rather build and support cancer centers around the world, build awareness of global cancer needs and perhaps the most importantly, build international bone marrow databases through the "Get On The List" campaign.

They have been responsible for adding over 30,000 people to the national bone marrow database. One way they run the drive is through registration at music concerts throughout the country. Additionally, they raise awareness and registration through events like Chili Cook-Offs and School of Rock events.

They are responsible for the first mammography machine in the country of Nepal as well as a transport vehicle for a children's cancer center in New Jersey.

Many musicians are supporting this cause through funding on reverbnation.com where half the proceeds of purchased music are donated to LHS.

Give Back or Pay it Forward: Helping the Community

There are times when paying it forward takes on large challenges, such as neighbor helping neighbor in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. Sometimes paying it forward becomes a personal crusade.
Such is the story of Doodle. Author and musician Jim Wood, has written a children's book. Jim's friend Michele has done the illustrations. It's the story of a little girl and a dog and a life journey. Ashley is the fourteen-year-old daughter of Michele Quinn's close family friend. Ashley has been critically ill and in and out of the hospital for the last four months.
All personal proceeds from the online sales of the book, "Doodle" from now until May will be donated to Ashley's Army.
Jim Wood works hard for his family and for his craft. This is his first published book and its profits are being used to help someone else. It's not a lot of money, only $7 and with its profits going toward helping a family with a sick little girl, it's money well spent.

Doodle is a rhyming book told from the view of a little girl as she and her dog explore the world around them and wonder how things were made.

The problem has always been that if you want a first-rate one, you needed to go out to the local gourmet coffee shop or fine restaurant to buy it. These days, there are more options for creating a…See More
