Not at all. In the cooling mode, energy consumption is the same. When you use a mini split in the heat mode, it is very efficient. Compare the Sanyo 18KS72 (cool only) and 18KHS72 (heat and cool). In the cooling mode both units draw 1.2 to 7 amps. There is no difference. The 18KHS72 draws 1.3 to 7.4 amps in the heating mode, using about the same amount of energy to heat as it does to cool.
You should also note that the Heat Pump that a Mini Split Air Conditioner uses is more efficient than most existing heating systems in the home, like forced hot air. You will also gain the benefit of being able to control the temperature only in the room you are in, while you are using it. Even if you don't think you will use the heating function of the unit, you should still get it. The price difference is usually very small and you may find later on that you are glad to have it.
