The Importance of Safety Valves on Gas Log Burners

While most of us are aware of the importance of safety valves, nowhere are they more critical than on gas logs.  In a gas log burner, a safety valve prevents gas from escaping into the room, in the event the pilot flame goes out.  Because propane gas is heavier than air, any gas that enters the room will not escape through the venting and will instead remain in the room.  For this reason, safety valves are standard on all liquid propane burners.

On the other hand, natural gas is lighter than air, and if the pilot were to go out, the gas will generally vent up.  Most states have enacted legislation requiring safety valves be used on all gas log burners, regardless of the type of fuel used.  This ensures gas never escapes into your home.  However some states still allow natural gas heaters to be sold without safety valves.

We, at Total Home Supply believe a pilot safety valve should be a manufacturing requirement.  We urge you to check with either the product manufacturer, or the product seller to be assured the burner you are buying comes equipped with a safety valve.  If you have any technical questions regarding gas log burners, safety valves or any other products on our website, email us at sales@totalhomesupply.com or call us at 877-847-0050 to talk to one of our expert technical staff.
