It seems as if the easy ride into winter has ended. It's getting cold, and quickly. While most of us are capable of keeping ourselves warm as the temperatures plummet, not so the elderly. Take the time to visit a senior neighbor or relative. Going to the store in cold or bad weather can be an energy-sapping, and even dangerous adventure for those less nimble. Offer to pick-up their groceries as you do your own shopping. Walk their dog. Check on their furnace, have they had an oil delivery...and if their utility bills are up to date.
Look for any safety issues in the home. Using the oven for heat, wearing long, loose sleeves while cooking, throw rugs that can cause them to fall. Just use common sense and see things through the eyes of an older person.
Offer a helping hand, lend an ear, give a hug. You'll both feel better for it.
